Dome Shape criteria

If your team has a domed shape look, you will get +5 points.  If the igloo isn’t finished (i.e. you can see the sky) or does not have a domed shape, your team will be deducted -10 points.   If the dome shape is not quite achieved while building your igloo, the team can actually shape it to give it the desired look.

Dimensions criteria

Get the minimum inside height and diameter of 1.8m (6ft) and earn +10 pts each.  Fail to get the minimum dimensions and your team will be deducted -10 points for each measurement that doesn’t make the cut.

Entrance criteria

If sized for an adult you will earn +10 points, if not -10 points the other way.

Tools and lots

Snow shovels, carpenter's rip saws, aluminum snow saws, warm clothes, thermos are all acceptable and needed.  Teams are also allowed step ladders or steps in order to help them in the construction of the igloo.  Teams will need to carve their own blocks from engineered snow on their construction lot.  Engineered snow is compacted snow that will allow participants to cut blocks out of.  Construction lots are 7.6m (25ft) by 7.6m (25ft) equaling 58m2 (625ft2).  Again, teams do NOT have to worry how to make snow blocks. We will make sure all teams have a mass of dense snow for the competition, you just need to carve your own blocks. Respecting the tools allowed will earn your team +10 points.  In order to loose –10 points here your team decided to ignore the on site officials prior warning.

NO WATER ALLOWED!!! You can drink it but you can't use it to solidify your igloo. Sorry.  A maximum of 5 Gallons of water will be allowed for those who want to decorate with food coloring.

Construction criteria

Igloos have to be built from individual snow BLOCKS to qualify!

Igloos must be empty inside. What this means is that NO interior support of any sort is allowed. For example you can’t have a pillar inside the igloo to give it extra support for the strength test. If your igloo is well built the dome shape will be very strong.

2. TEAM

General

A maximum 4 individuals form a team.  Teams are allowed to have a spare member at the site (or on call) to replace anybody at any time just as long as the team does not have more than 4 active members working on the site at one time.  High school teams are REQUIRED to have one teacher, parent or adult supervising.  The adult, parent or teacher can be the spare member of the team and can be at the site encouraging his/her team.  Deductions of -5 points (per extra individual) can occur if a team is caught with more than 4 members working on the site.  No deductions will be done if the spare is not used or seen during the competition.  Teams can consist of individuals, companies, students, organizations, engineers and just about anybody who can come up with willing candidates to accept a cool challenge.  A team registration cost of 200$ is required to sign up a team.  High school teams or university teams can register for only 100$.

Team Composition

The word team means more than one person working together.  Participation and team work will be required to build your igloo.  Organizers will be doing a surprise visit at each of the identified periods on the scoring sheet (i.e morning, afternoon, evening).  Teams can earn up to +20 points here and the only thing you need to remember is the more team members present the more points you get.  Watch out not to go over the limit of 4 because a –5 point deduction can occur for every extra player caught.

Team identification

Teams will be required to clearly identify themselves from a distance.  This can be done with simple T-shirt overlays, jerseys or any other approved methods.  Simply having the same caps or toques on will not be considered adequate. Organizers will be doing a surprise visit at each of the identified periods on the scoring sheet (i.e morning, afternoon, evening).  Teams can earn up to +5 points for the members present that are well identified and loose –5 points if they are not.

Note:  Visits for team composition and team identification will be done at the same time and at the discretion of the organizers.

3. STRENGTH

On Sunday at 2pm the strength test will begin. Each igloo will be submitted to the weight of at least one large tractor tire (250lbs) deposited gently with an excavator (on its side like a crown on your head) over the dome roof of the igloo.  Once the chains are tension free, your igloo will be subject to 250lbs of vertical pressure.  Resisting to the weight of one tractor tire will earn your team +10 points.  Resisting the weight of a second tire (500lbs) will be optional but if your igloo resists your team will be awarded an extra +20 points.  A total of +30 points can be gained in this category.

4. PUBLIC OPINION

Feel free to decorate the site and use your imagination in order to get maximum points during public judging.  On Sunday teams will be asked to stop working on their igloos and sites at 10am.  At this time public judging will begin and last until 2pm.  The team that gets the most points will earn +20 points, second most votes gets +15 points, third most votes gets +10 points, no votes gets 0 points and all other gets +5 points.

Teams caught doing solicitations will be deducted –5 points every time.

5. SAFETY

Team Captain

Your team can earn more points by being safe.  Having your team captain or leader present at all times is one way of making sure things are well supervised.  The team captain needs to be identified prior to the start of the competition on your registration form.  The captain can also be the spare team member supervising the work (i.e. for student teams the adult, teacher or parent can take this role).  If your team captain is present during the surprise visit, your team will earn +5 points.

Well Dressed

The proper level of clothing is very important not to get frost bites.  You can earn +5 points here as well.

First Aid Kit

First aid kits must be on the lot at all times during the competition.  Showing your kit during the surprise visit will earn you +5 points.

Working safely

No fooling around on the site, this may lead to injuries.  Well behaved teams will get +5 points.

Note: The safety surprise visit will be done only once on Saturday at the discretion of the organizers.  When the time comes to do the inspections, all teams will be asked to drop everything and stand at the front of their lots and await inspection.

 6. BONUS POINTS

 Sleep in the igloo

Sleeping/staying in your igloo on Saturday night will earn the team +5 points.  At least two members are required to spend the night at or in the igloo.  We recommend doing a ventilation hole somewhere on the igloo if you actually decide on doing this.  Sleeping in the igloo may be declined by officials if your structure is deemed to be unsafe for occupants.

Igloo quiz

During the competition, teams will all be given a short quiz with 20 questions on it.  Teams will have 10 minutes to answer the true or false and multiple choice questions on the quiz.  The answers to all questions can be found on the igloo websites somewhere.  Get all 20 questions right and earn 20 points.  All questions will be worth +1 point.  Good luck to all!

Important

The organizing committee reserves the right to change the rules before, during or after the competition at their discretion in order to resolve any disputes or problems.
